Free WiFi Across 7.2 Square Kilometres

EZELINK delivered free public WiFi across the whole of Dubai Silicon Oasis — 175 outdoor access points covering the technology park, its residential communities and its public spaces, making DSO the first free zone in Dubai with 24/7 free wireless internet throughout.

The Challenge

No Building to Hide the Network In

Almost every WiFi project has a building to work with — ceilings to mount to, risers to cable through, walls to bound the coverage. Dubai Silicon Oasis had 7.2 square kilometres of technology park: roads, public spaces, residential communities and open ground between buildings rather than inside them.

That changes the problem completely. Coverage has to be carried across distance rather than through structure, which means backhaul becomes the design question, and every piece of equipment lives outdoors in UAE heat, dust and humidity permanently.

Then there is the user management problem. Free public WiFi at this scale means an enormous number of people connecting each day, most of them once, none of them known to you in advance. Issuing and managing guest accounts individually would be unworkable — but the network still has to identify users properly, because public internet access in the UAE is regulated.

  • 7.2 sq km of outdoor coverage, with no building structure to work from
  • High-density usage on genuinely open, free public WiFi
  • Guest account management at a scale where per-user accounts don't work
  • Equipment living permanently outdoors in UAE conditions
  • A turn-key requirement: one supplier for design, build, management and 24/7 support

The Solution

175 Outdoor Access Points, Linked by Wireless Backhaul

Our professional services team designed and implemented the core access point infrastructure: 175 outdoor units across the park, linked by point-to-point and point-to-multipoint wireless backhaul carrying data to the access layer. Wireless backhaul is what makes an area this size affordable — trenching fibre across 7.2 square kilometres of live technology park would have cost more than the network.

A WLAN controller handles channel calibration and power settings automatically. On an outdoor network of this scale, where the RF environment changes with construction, foliage and neighbouring networks, hand-tuning 175 access points is not a maintainable position — the network has to correct itself.

The user management problem was solved by removing accounts entirely. Instead of issuing credentials, a visitor enters their name and mobile number and is online. Authentication runs through an SMS gateway that associates the device MAC address with the mobile number, which identifies the user for regulatory purposes without anyone having to create, distribute or revoke an account. The gateway runs on premise in passive cluster mode, so a failure doesn't take public access down, and applies bandwidth limits per user so no single connection degrades the rest.

  • 175 outdoor access points across the technology park
  • Point-to-point and point-to-multipoint wireless backhaul to the access layer
  • Automated channel calibration and power management across all units
  • Name and mobile number to connect — no accounts to issue or manage
  • SMS-gateway authentication binding MAC address to mobile number
  • On-premise gateway in passive cluster mode, with per-user bandwidth limits

The Results

A Smart City Layer, Not Just a Hotspot

Free wireless internet is now available 24/7 across the entire technology park — at the DSOA headquarters, throughout the outdoor public areas, and across the Cedre and Semmer Villas communities and their community centre. DSO became the first free zone in Dubai to offer that across its whole footprint.

What it enables day to day is more practical than the headline suggests. Temporary spaces — meeting rooms, event areas, pop-up working spaces — can be networked in minutes rather than waiting on cabling. Contingency cable runs become unnecessary because wireless fills the gaps. Adds, moves and changes stop being projects. For an authority whose tenants are technology companies, that flexibility is the product.

  • 7.2 sq km covered with free 24/7 public wireless internet
  • First free zone in Dubai to deploy free WiFi across its whole footprint
  • Connection in seconds — name and mobile number, no account required
  • Temporary spaces networked in minutes, without new cabling
  • Lower cabling cost, with wireless filling gaps that would have needed contingency runs

"Making our premises entirely WiFi free-enabled marks an essential step forward in transforming Dubai Silicon Oasis into a smart city in accordance with the directives of our leadership. We are confident that the provision of free WiFi will add significant value to the visitors and residents of DSO."
