Job one is brutal in its simplicity: if the network stops, the store stops selling. Everything else is optional by comparison. What the operations layer demands:
- POS and payments on their own segment — card terminals and tills isolated from guest traffic on separate VLANs, both for security standards and so a busy Saturday of guest browsing can never slow a transaction
- Priority where it counts — quality-of-service rules that put a payment ahead of a customer's video stream, always, automatically
- Coverage in the unglamorous places — the stockroom where scanners work, the loading door, the fitting-room corridor; operations don't happen only on the shop floor
- Failover on the circuit — a backup path (secondary line or 4G/5G) so a provider fault doesn't mean cash-only Saturday

The test for this layer isn't speed — it's what happens at peak on the busiest weekend of the year, and who's watching when something degrades at 9pm. Retail trades when IT support doesn't work; the network has to be operated accordingly.
03 · Job TwoThe customer layer: guest WiFi that sells
Guest WiFi in a store isn't about giving shoppers internet — they have data plans. It's about what the connection moment produces for the retailer. Done properly, the captive portal turns a browsing customer into a known one: a verified phone number, a marketing opt-in, and a visit on record — captured in the ten seconds it takes to connect.
That data compounds into retail's most undervalued channel. E-commerce sees everything: traffic, bounce rate, conversion, return visits. A physical store, by default, sees a till total and a hunch. WiFi analytics closes most of that gap with data the network already generates:
- Footfall — visitors per day and per hour, so staffing follows the actual peaks, not the assumed ones
- Dwell time — how long visits last, and whether the new layout or campaign changed it
- Repeat-visit rate — the metric loyalty schemes only measure for members, measured for everyone: who comes back, and how often
- Capture vs pass-by — in mall and high-street settings, how many people near the store actually enter — the physical bounce rate

06 · The BuildDesigning for real retail spaces
Retail interiors are quietly hostile radio environments, and store networks inherit constraints other venues don't have:
- Metal everywhere — racking, shelving, mirrors, mannequins and stock absorb and scatter signal; the empty-shell survey lies, so design for the fitted, stocked store
- Ceiling politics — retail fit-outs fight for ceiling space with lighting, security and brand aesthetics; AP placement has to work with the fit-out designer, not after them
- Landlord rules — in-mall stores work inside the property's regulations and riser access; a provider who knows the process keeps the fit-out on schedule
- Back-of-house coverage — the stockroom behind a concrete wall is where scanners and staff devices live; it's part of the design, not leftover signal
- Density at the entrance — footfall analytics and guest capture need deliberate coverage at the doorway and window zone, where phones first appear
None of this is exotic — it's just survey-led design applied to how stores are actually built and stocked, which is exactly what separates a retail deployment from a router purchase.
07 · Field NotesSix mistakes we keep seeing
- POS and guests on one network. The most dangerous default in retail: card terminals sharing a flat network with shopper phones. Segmentation isn't advanced networking — it's the minimum.
- The telco router running the store. It terminates the line; it doesn't segment, prioritise payments, run a portal, keep logs or tell anyone when it's struggling.
- Guest WiFi with no capture. An open network or wall password: full cost, zero data, zero analytics, and a compliance gap — the worst of every option.
- Analytics nobody opens. The dashboard exists; nobody staffs Tuesday differently because of it. Intelligence only counts when a named person acts on it monthly.
- Branch-by-branch drift. Every new store gets whatever the local contractor installed. Three years later, ten branches, ten networks, one brand — and no way to compare them.
- Skipping failover. One circuit, no backup, in a business where the network being down means the tills are down. The 4G/5G fallback costs less than one lost Saturday.
