The Challenge

Nine Thousand Five Hundred Moving Sites

A taxi network is not one deployment. It is 9,500 individual sites, each with its own router, its own SIM, its own power supply and its own thermal environment — and every one of them moving, across different operating franchises, with no central depot where the fleet sits still.

Taxis earn money by being on the road. Every vehicle taken off shift for installation is lost revenue for a driver, so fitting windows were measured in minutes between shift changes, not hours in a workshop. And whatever went in had to keep working through a Dubai summer, inside a vehicle, without a fan.

On top of the physical rollout sat a telco integration: the whole service had to land inside du's core network, and every public login had to satisfy UAE regulatory requirements for identity capture and log retention.

The Solution

Our Own Hardware, Provisioned Zero-Touch

We designed and built the router ourselves. The EZETRANSPORT AC750T carries dual WiFi antennae, 4G/3G antennae and a GPS module in one fanless unit, with vehicle anti-interference and a heat sink rated to operate between 30°C and 85°C — comfortably inside what a Dubai summer does to a car.

The detail that made 9,500 installations possible wasn't the hardware, though. It was carrier-grade provisioning built to scale to tens of thousands of devices, which removed the need to pre-configure anything. A router could be fitted by someone with no networking skills at all, then configured, updated and monitored centrally afterwards. That is the difference between a nine-month rollout and a three-year one.

One more piece of engineering worth calling out: the router is integrated with the taxi meter, so the WiFi SSID only broadcasts when the vehicle is actually on hire. Idle taxis stop adding noise to the RF environment, and riders only ever see a network that is genuinely available to them.

The Model

Free for Riders, Funded by Advertising

The commercial design mattered as much as the technical one. Riders get free access with a data allowance, or can buy an unlimited day pass for a few dirhams. Neither is paid for out of fares — the service is underwritten by advertising served through the captive portal, with 1247 Media as the advertising partner.

The monetization engine supports gender, location and device-specific ad insertion across a multi-tenant, multi-role environment, so multiple agencies and advertisers can run campaigns on the same network without seeing each other's inventory. Reporting covers bandwidth utilisation, user tracking and revenue generation in one place.

Access is authenticated by SMS one-time password, which satisfies TDRA requirements for identifying users of public internet access, and web access logs are forwarded to the relevant authorities as required.
